Hearing Aides Project

Ongoing: We are helping to launch the Hearing Aides Project (which is a stand alone initiative), pairing volunteer therapists with a cultural broker/interpreter to work with asylum seekers to help them tell their stories of trauma first to a compassionate listener before being subjected to skepticism and scrutiny that can be re-traumatizing. Research shows that the way a trauma survivor is responded to when she tries to tell her story makes a huge difference in her recovery. Those who are not believed when they first tell their story are at higher risk for developing worse PTSD. Safe Space Radio is on the news! I am grateful to Channel 6 for this piece which gives a behind the scenes peek at how the show is made.

Dr. Ulrich B. Jacobsohn Lifetime Achievement Award

April 28, 2016, Received the Dr. Ulrich B. Jacobsohn Lifetime Achievement Award for “extraordinary and tireless efforts” on behalf of those with psychiatric disorders. (as a recognition for the work of Safe Space Radio).

Anne is a Board certified psychiatrist in Portland, Maine. She trained at Harvard Medical School, where she also served on the faculty, teaching at Cambridge Hospital, before moving to Maine. She started Safe Space Radio in 2008 to reduce stigma and offer hope, because each person who dares to tell a vulnerable story contributes to a safer culture for everyone.
